CHAMPAGNE

Vintage Champagne has become an investor’s favorite these past 5-6 years.  With the high release prices of the 2009 and 2010 Bordeaux en primeurs, Champagne cuvée de tetes that enjoy a similar status appear as great values.  A lackluster 2011 & 2012 Bordeaux en primeurs continued to spur investment in vintage Champagnes.

Recent trends:

  • The search for quality grower Champagne;
  • Vintage character difference becomes more apparent;
  • An increasing palate preference for mature Champagnes.

There are many reasons to include Champagne in a balanced wine portfolio: Its pricing is still undervalue relative to Bordeaux and Burgundy.

Demand for specific vintages and mature Champagne continue to increase while market supply continue to decrease.  Prices have risen steadily.

Our favorite picks include:   Dom Perignon 1996, Louis Roederer Cristal 2002, 2004, and 2005.

Rated 98 points by Robert Parker, Taittinger Comte 2002  was an out-performer, with more market demand in 2012 than Krug and Dom Perignon.  Its pricing has increased 50% in a mere 6 months!

In addition to these "blue chips" titans, we also favor a handful of grower Champagnes including Jacque Selosse and Pierre Gimonnet.
