Below are some of our favorite up and rising Burgundy producers:
Anne Gros, Vosne-Romanée
6.5 Hectares of vines, no premier cru, but three well-known grand crus – Richebourg, Echezeaux, and Clos de Vougeot. Of all the Gros producers, Domaine Anne Gros by far produces the best wines.
Note: Anne Gros is not to be confused with Anne-Francoise Gros [A-F Gros], or Domaine Gros Frere et Soeur.
Bonneau du Martray, Pernand-Vergelesses
A “don’t miss” winery according to Allen Meadow. Bonneau du Martray only makes 2 wines, both grand cru – a red Corton and a white Corton-Charlemagne. Owning 11 continuous hectares (a rarity in Burgundy), it is one of the largest producer of Corton-Charlemagne.
His recent vintages have received high acclaims from wine critics. Robert Parker wrote that its “2010 Corton-Charlemagne is the epitome of elegance, finesse and refinement in white Burgundy. Readers will have a very, very hard time finding a wine with this much pure class and textural finesse.”
Dujac, Morey-St-Denise
A relatively new producer (founded in 1964, first bottled vintage 1969), but nonetheless very well received internationally due to his dedication to quality.
In collaboration of Etienne de Montille in 2005, Dujac acquired vineyard plots from Domaine Charles Thomas, expanding his portfolio to include Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Les Beaumonts and a large slice of Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts. Post acquisition, Dujac owns 15+ hectares.
Hudelot Noellat, Vougeot
Owns ~7 hectares of vineyards, amongst his best are Richebourg, Romanée St Vivant, Vosne Romanée Les Malconsorts, Les Beaumonts, and Les Suchots. Noellat’s Clos Vougeot is deemed a consistent and reliable star in Clos Vougeot, a relatively large grand cru vineyard where many producers often underdeliver.
A natural winemaker – working with very old vines, no green-pruning, natural yeasts, no fining, no filtration. His winse have charm, exuberance, depth, and are crafted for aging.
Liger-Belair, Vosne-Romanée
Aubert de Villaine, the owner of Domaine de la Romanée Conti , has nothing but praise for Louis-Michel Liger-Belair. At 85 acres, La Romanée is the smallest vineyard in Burgundy. The soil structure is similar to its neighbor La Romanée-Conti, with a bit less clay. Roughly 350 cases are produced each year.
Both a young and an old brand in Burgundy. History of the domaine dates back to 1815, at one point with 60 hectare of vineyards including the famed La Romanée and La Tache. The estate was sold off in 1933 and repurchased by Louis-Michel’s grandfather. In 2005, Louis-Michel stopped selling grapes to Bouchard , restoring La Romanée to its monopole status.
Aux Reignots remains its finest premier cru. Unlike others [Cathiard on top, Grivot middle, Arnoux bottom], Liger-Belair’s plot runs from top to bottom giving him a relatively broader terroir character. Liger-Belair also has a fermage agreement with the Lamadon family to produce Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée premier crus.
Perrot Minot, Morey-St-Denis
“A rising star”… whose vineyards average an impressive 65 years of age across 36 acres in 19 appellations… 60% of which are grands or premier crus. Perrot-Minot averages 6,250 cases a year, including a novelty wine, Nuit-St-Georges La Richemone Ultra, a cuvée made from 75-year-old vines.” – Wine Spectator, 2002.
Christophe has made significant changes since the 1990s. His Chambolle Musigny, made from 90 year-old vines, is among the best of the village. Other great wines include premier cru Combe d’Orveau, Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyeres-Chambertin.
Pierre Damoy, Gevrey-Chambertin
One of the most advantaged super-star, with 77% of his vineyard being grand crus! Pierre Damoy has the largest holding of Clos de Beze (35%) as well as owns 40% of Chapelle Chambertin.
His top wines: Gevrey Chambertin Clos Tamisot (monopole), Chapelle Chambertin, Clos de Beze.
Robert Groffier, Morey-St-Denis
Domaine Groffier is often mistaken as a Chambolle Musigny based producer as most of its vineyards lie in Chambolle Musigny and none in Morey-St-Denis. Eight hectare of vineyards including Bonnes Mares, Chambertin Clos de Beze, and Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses. Currently runs by third generation’s Nicolas.
“Each and every wine at this Domaine was a first-rate example of its terroir, from the Bourgogne to the grand crus. The meticulous work of Serge Groffier in the vineyards is evidenced by each glass of nectar from this well-known and soon-to-be-famous domaine.” – Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, Issue 118.
